Billy Markus is an American software engineer who wrote the first Dogecoin releases after contacting Jackson Palmer in 2013. He was then at IBM in Portland. The client he shipped was a fork, a prank, and — this is the part amateur histories skip — a functioning money.
Work
Markus has described sending Palmer a screenshot of a Comic Sans client as proof he was not a tourist. They pushed the chain live on 6 December 2013. He remained the principal builder for the first releases, then stepped back as a volunteer Core culture formed. Later commentary from both founders is cooler than the 2021 fan club: they knew what they had made, and what they had not.
